How many of us have big goals but no time implement them? We become overwhelmed with goal planning sometimes don’t know where to start. We plan to get around to it “some day” but the days pass by without progress. Sound familiar? Don’t worry. You’re not alone! I’ll share some tips to help you smash your goals.
If you’re ready to start your goal planning process, you’re in the right place for tips. Instead of pushing things off for “some day,” why not take one tiny step today? We can do that! What’s one thing you can do today that will inch you toward your big goal?
Now, don’t worry. I’m not talking about reorganizing your whole office. I’m talking about one tiny specific task you can do today to get moving in the right direction. Start there. It’s like the saying “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Let’s take that first step today.
My Goal Planning Epiphany
The Covid quarantine really got me thinking. Being stuck in my house, I looked around and realized I needed to organize. And not even just in the house. I needed to organize my LIFE. I needed a plan. I needed some goals.
I shared my thoughts with friends and realized I wasn’t alone. Lots of people were coming to the same conclusion. Seems like many of us have been looking for more structure and were starting to reevaluate things in general.
From Sleepy Procrastinator to Goal Smasher
If I’m honest, the earlier part of my Covid quarantine was a bit… sleepy. Slow. Unproductive. And that was fine at first when we thought it would just a two week period. Once it became clear that we were in for a long haul, I knew I needed to make some adjustments.
I’ve created and used many planners over the years but had pushed them aside. I knew it was time to pull them back out and create a plan for myself. It’s not that I didn’t have goals or have things I wanted to do. I just hadn’t figured out how to implement them and actually get started yet.
I created some goal planning templates for myself to simplify my goals and manage my time. Thousands of people have used my planner resources and if you’re reading this, they may benefit you too. You can join my Free 3 Day Goal Smashing Challenge and get some of these goal planning templates for free.
Why Goal Setting is Important
Setting goals is good way to manifest your long-term vision by focusing on short-term feats. Writing our goals down helps us to plan out our intentions, the steps we must take to fulfill them, and how we’ll need to manage our time to do so. Without taking the time to set goals, our intentions become more passive without as much intentional action.
Goal planning prompts us to evaluate our progress and what tasks we need to complete in order to complete our goal. This makes the goal seem more real, more attainable, and not just something we’ll do “some day.” It’s those small tasks leading up to the big goal that really make the most impact too. Just 10 minutes a day working on tiny tasks can eventually lead us to completing a large project. Accomplishing small tasks feels good because we are rewarded with a sense of pride in a job well done. What can you do in 10 minutes today?
Tips for Effective Goal Planning

1. Identify your BIG goals and write them down.
Think big. What’s your overall intention? Maybe you’re looking to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Or maybe you’d like to organize your house. Perhaps you’re starting a new business. Whatever it is, identify your big goals and be sure to write them down.
2. Break those goals down into smaller parts.
Okay, so now that you’ve identified your overall intentions, it’s time to think about how to achieve these goals. Break them down into smaller parts. For example, if your goal is to organize your office, think about smaller actions that would support that bigger goal.
3. Break those goals down EVEN MORE (into teensy tiny parts).
Now it’s time to think of the tiny targets that’ll bring us closer to the big goals. Do you need to buy something to work on your goal? Is there something small you can knock out that would contribute to your overall goal? Not every step needs to be impressive or time consuming to be productive.
What can you accomplish in 15 minutes that would support your goal? You may have tons of tiny steps for your goal but pick 3 to begin with, but lots of tiny easy steps will slowly inch you towards your big goal (even if it’s the same task over and over). Start with 3 tasks for now.
The Secret to Successful Goal Planning is Consistency.
One you have a system in place, the most important piece is consistency. So keep up the good work and continue taking those small steps until they become part of your daily habits. Just 10 minutes a day adds up and you’ll see big changes over time. But only if you stick with it!
